Make some waves

Surfers wax up your board and head for the swell-filled seas around Botany Bay near Broadstairs. Or learn how to ride the waves from the experts at the Joss Bay Surf School. If the waves aren’t cooperating try paddle-boarding instead. The windswept coves around Greatstone, Minnis Bay and Romney Marsh down the coast from Folkestone are a kite surfer’s paradise. And conditions are perfect for paddle boarding in Whitstable.

Broadstairs

Enjoy a quintessential British day at the seaside at Broadstairs, a charming coastal town that was a favourite holiday spot for Charles Dickens. You can go traditional with ice cream and bucket and spade, surf some gnarly waves around Joss bay, or just drift into an art gallery and linger over lunch. Margate

This charming but contemporary seaside resort is in the middle of an exciting renaissance thanks to its mix of relaxation, culture and adrenalin-fuelled amusements. It’s the perfect weekend getaway for overworked Londoners, with gorgeous sandy beaches, thrills at the iconic Dreamland amusement park, a cool café culture, and a thriving arts scene centred on The Turner Contemporary.

Ramsgate

Soak up the continental vibe in cosmopolitan Ramsgate and stroll from pavement café to waterfront bar around England’s only Royal harbour. Discover the rich maritime heritage and cultural history of this picturesque historic port. Or escape the bustle with a boat trip to spot seals around Goodwin Sands or a walk along stunning sandy beaches and dramatic white cliffs.

Herne Bay

Relax on the beach in a deckchair, stroll down the pier and look out for the historic Clock Tower in the seaside town of Herne Bay. Play a round of mini golf on the seafront, or head towards Whitstable for stunning coastal views at Long Rock. Herne Bay is located along the Oyster Bay Trail which stretches for a total 6.7 miles between Whitstable and Reculver. Head east along the coast and reach the imposing Reculver Towers, the remains of the Roman fort built in the 12th Century. Explore Reculver Country Park surrounding the towers and discover a wide variety of plants and wildlife.
