Getting there: Take Southeastern trains from London Bridge, or London Charing Cross to Battle, it's a short hour and twenty minute trip to enjoy this historic town.

A new, contemporary statue, designed by sculptor Guy Portelli from a winning idea of a local resident Mr Kenneth Higgs, makes an exciting impact on visitors entering Battle from the northern end of the High Street. The statue pays homage, not just to the 7000 lives lost in 1066 and in subsequent conflicts, but to animals too, particularly horses, who were killed in action. With English Heritage’s 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield at the southerly entrance to the town, and now the sculpture at the northerly entrance, take time to walk along the pretty High Street to visit both commemorative sites.

Stand where the battle for England’s future was fought. Its history began on the fateful 14th of October 1066, when after many hours of hard fighting, William the Conqueror’s Norman invaders finally defeated King Harold Godwinson’s English army in this very place. Walk the battlefield sculpture trail, soak up the gatehouse rooftop views, discover the exhibition and explore the abbey ruins. With so many ways to enjoy the scene of England’s most renowned battle, this vast and varied site provides a unique day out for the whole family.
