Our roles

Apprenticeships

We currently offer apprenticeships in Customer Service, Engineering and Business. You’ll achieve a recognised qualification. Many of our apprentices end up in permanent roles with Southeastern.

Conductor

Whether you’re greeting a passenger or issuing a ticket you adopt the same polite, personable, professional approach. You look after the safety and security of thousands of people every day. We provide extensive training to complement your natural ability to engage with others, and give you the confidence to deal with any possible circumstance.

“To be a good conductor you have to know your own mind, while being able to follow the rules. You are very much your own boss and you do need to think on your feet.”

Customer Service Advisors

You’re the face of the company on the platforms and in your station – making announcements, answering queries, promoting and selling tickets and assisting the huge range of customers you’ll meet every day. You have key safety and security duties, and also keep our stations tidy and clean.

“I really enjoy giving people advice and reassurance when they’re confused about what train to catch or where to go. Going home at the end of the day, it feels good knowing you’ve helped someone.”

Driver

Driving a train brings responsibility, pride and achievement. You know you’re providing an invaluable service to thousands of people every single day. We look for people with concentration, co-ordination and a talent for customer service. Our training provides all the skills and knowledge you'll need.

"The biggest misconception about driving a train these days is that it's all automated. It's not. As a professional driver our responsibility is not just safety, its keeping our customers informed on how their journey is going – it makes a real difference.”

Engineering

Southeastern Engineering delivers safe and reliable trains for passenger service. Our engineers undertake both light and heavy maintenance repairs, defect rectification, modifications and train presentation.

There are opportunities as Service Engineers at various levels as well as in our Engineering support teams including Materials, Planning, Technical & Quality.

Head Office

Head office support roles are crucial to ensure that we deliver the best possible service to our passengers. Opportunities can arise in Finance, HR, Communications and Publicity, and Safety and Environment. Depending on the role, you may need specific qualifications and experience.

Kent Integrated Control Centre

We operate a joint control centre (KICC) with Network Rail. Here controllers monitor the train service and minimise the impact of disruption by adjusting services, and providing timely and accurate information to passengers.

Some of the roles within the KICC are:
  • Senior Information Team Member
  • Train Service Manager
  • Resource Manager
  • Passenger Experience Delivery Manager

On Board Manager

As an On Board Manager, working on our high speed services, you meet and greet passengers, offer information and advice on their destination or onward journey, and make sure that your train is always presentable. With your positive approach and a willingness to help, you ensure passengers have an experience they can take with them long after they leave the train.

“Although it’s great zipping along at 140 miles an hour, the best bit of my job is dealing with the passengers. There are different faces every day and almost as many different questions that I get asked.”

Passenger Host

As part of the High Speed team, you create a safe, secure, pleasant and comfortable environment for our passengers. Your responsibilities include providing service information, selling tickets, dispatching trains, operating ticket gates, and dealing with safety and security issues. You need a team ethos and the ability to multitask.

“I love working as a Passenger Host as it gives me so much variety in my role - one week I will be working the gates and the next week in the ticket office.”

Revenue Protection

Alongside your supportive colleagues, you’re out and about travelling on our trains every day. You inspect passengers’ tickets and collect fares, interview suspected fare evaders, and complete paperwork. You need tact and diplomacy, a cool, calm nature, and great written and verbal communication skills.

“Even when issuing a penalty fare it is important to focus on customer service – if someone you’ve issued a penalty fare to walks away saying “thank you”, we know we’ve done a great job!”
