First Class
Do you want to travel in First Class?
Yes, you do need a valid First Class Ticket to travel in First Class. You can book tickets online.
If you don’t, you may have to pay the difference in price between a First Class and Standard Class fare or be at risk of receiving a Penalty Fare. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase upgrades to First Class if you hold a Standard class Season ticket.
On some routes you may be able to get a First Class Season ticket – valid for anything from a week to a year. Check with your local ticket office if you are interested.
There is no First Class accommodation between the following stations:
- Sheerness and Sittingbourne
- Strood and Paddock Wood
- Grove Park and Bromley North
- Rochester and Dartford
- Dartford and London
Wholly within the London travelcard 1-6 area (except for mainline services between London and Bromley South, Orpington and St Mary Cray).
There is also no First Class seating on high speed trains.
When First Class accommodation is full, you can claim for the difference in cost between a First Class and standard class ticket for that journey.

Sometimes, when it's exceptionally busy, Standard Class passengers are advised to sit in First Class. This is when First Class is declassified. If this happens and you have a First Class ticket you can claim for the difference in cost between a First Class and Standard Class ticket for that journey.
