If you have a Travelcard (One Day or Season), a 60+ Oyster Card or a London Boroughs issued Freedom Pass, then you are permitted to use any services within the Zones listed on the Travelcard or pass you hold (subject to any applicable time or usage restrictions). If you want to travel further afield, you can buy a Boundary Zone ticket to or from the station outside the Zones in which your Travelcard or pass is valid. This should be done before you start your journey.

At our ticket offices, these tickets are issued to or from the London zonal boundary, which will show as, for example, “Boundary Zone 6” on the ticket.

From self-service ticket machines in our stations, you can select a “Boundary Zone” origin or destination and the correct excess fare will be shown.

Boundary Zone tickets are not currently available on our website or app, but you can buy the equivalent ticket by using a boundary station instead – see table below for boundary stations on the Southeastern network. If you are travelling away from London, enter the boundary station that corresponds to the outermost zone on your Travelcard as your origin station instead of London. If you are travelling towards London, enter the boundary station as your destination. Note that this way of extending your Travelcard can work out more expensive that buying a designated Boundary Zone ticket.

You will need to show your Travelcard and the boundary zone ticket to our staff, when asked.

Journey Examples

  • Ticket Office example: you have a Travelcard valid for Zones 1-4. You want to travel to Hastings. Show your ticket or pass and ask at the ticket office for a ticket from “Boundary Zone 4” to Hastings.
  • Self-service ticket machine example: you have a Travelcard valid for Zones 1-4. You want to travel to Hastings. From the vending machine, select a “Boundary Zone 4” as your origin and Hastings as your destination.
  • App or website example: you have a Travelcard valid for Zones 1-4. You want to travel to Hastings. On the website or app, buy a ticket from Elmstead Woods (which is the last station on this route in Zone 4) to Hastings.

Boundary Zone tickets can also be bought in the opposite direction (e.g. Hastings to Boundary Zone 4). Whilst the train you are on does not need to call at a station within the Zones or at the boundary station for this combination of tickets to be valid, it does need to pass through a location where both tickets are valid. In all scenarios, you will need to show your Travelcard and the Boundary Zone ticket to our staff, when asked.

To use a ticket to or from a Boundary Zone or boundary station when your journey starts or ends at a London terminal (Charing Cross, Cannon Street, Victoria, London Bridge, Waterloo East) your Travelcard will need to include Zone 1.

Standard discounts apply to these tickets if you hold the appropriate Railcard.

Boundary Zone fares do not apply to journeys on Southeastern’s Highspeed services.
