Here are our suggestions to help you discover more #SEhiddengems
High Street shopping
Dotted with many quaint and quirky shops, the High Street is a great place to lose an hour or two, especially if you’re looking for a memento from your day out. Perhaps you’re looking to find your next big read? Drop in to Baggins Book Bazaar – England’s largest rare and second-hand bookshop.
An imposing yet beautiful feature of the High Street is the Norman style cathedral. Well worth a visit, this spectacular building has been a feature of Rochester’s history as far back as 604AD. With a library, tea rooms and well kept gardens you can spend a good amount of time exploring the grounds, but best of all, admission is free.
To add to a day packed full with Rochester’s history why not head around the corner from the cathedral to the castle. Built in 1087 this English Heritage Norman castle was built across the old London Road guarding the important crossing over the River Medway. Climb to the top of the battlements for a spectacular view across the area.
If you’re ready to stop for something to eat you can head back to the High Street for a wide selection of restaurant options. One to note is Topes. This family run, independent restaurant has an expansive menu of modern British dishes which will ensure you’re refuelled for the rest of your day out. If you’re looking for a stiff drink they have a great selection of gins to choose from too.
Round your day off with a stop at the Guildhall Museum on the way back to the train station. The 17th century civic building is one of the finest in Kent with the museum being founded in 1897 to honour Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Housing a number of fantastic collections, the museum takes you on a journey through Rochester’s vibrant history, from Neolithic artefacts right up to more recent times.
