The staff at Hastings, St Leonards Warrior Square and West St Leonards have received a Secure Station award for station safety. The awards, part of the Secure Stations Scheme managed by the Department for Transport and British Transport Police, is in recognition of hard work to ensure a safe environment for passengers and staff when using the station.
Charles Horton, Managing Director Southeastern, commented, “The staff at all three of these stations have been working hard to try and provide our passengers with a secure and safe environment. We are all proud of them and the award is fully justified. These stations join an ever growing list of stations with this accreditation and will continue to work with our partners to make sure that we get more stations recognised.”
The award, presented by Amber Rudd, Member of Parliament for Hastings & Rye, is an acknowledgement of the on-going effort to deter crime and anti-social behaviour at the stations. Undertaken with the British Transport and local Police, the award is dependent on meeting strict security criteria including:
- Reduction in crime rates at the station
- Staff with conflict management knowledge
- Good station maintenance including, CCTV, lighting, use of corner mirrors, signage, removal of graffiti within 24 hours, fencing and boundaries
- Positive results in an independent passenger survey
Amber Rudd MP for Hastings & Rye, said: “I was delighted to present this award which reflects local efforts to improve the service and make passengers feel safer when travelling.”
Launched in 1998 and revised in 2003, the national scheme covers all rail and underground networks which are policed by British Transport Police. Hastings, St Leonards Warrior Square and West St Leonards are amongst over 60 stations on the Southeastern network to receive the award.
