Regeneration areas

In 2003 the Government launched the Sustainable Communities plan which highlighted two growth areas in our region - the Thames Gateway and Ashford.

The plan set out a long-term programme of action for delivering sustainable
communities in both urban and rural areas. It addressed housing supply issues in the South East, and the quality of our public spaces.

It didn’t just commit to a significant increase in resources and major reforms of housing and planning, but set out a new approach to how we build and what we build.

Thames Gateway

Europe’s largest regeneration project stretches 40 miles along the estuary
from Canary Wharf in London to Sittingbourne in Kent. Work is underway to
support local businesses, attract investment, build infrastructure, and to strengthen and develop communities.

The heart of the project is Ebbsfleet International station - a station served by both domestic and international rail services. Bringing the Ebbsfleet Valley within 17 minutes of London’s West End.

Ashford

Ashford is in the middle of an exciting transformation based on a programme of progressive change aimed at improving retail, commercial, educational, and
leisure services. A multi-million pound town centre redevelopment will create a place that offers a better quality of life, is safe, inviting and has improved access for all.

Around £2.5 billion will be invested, creating 31,000 homes and 28,000 jobs by 2031. Ashford will also benefit from our High Speed services launching in December, slashing the journey time to London to just 37 minutes.
